Dr Omar Mohamed (Co-investigator)
Head – Coastal and Marine Research Centre – Kenya’s Wildlife Research and Training Institute (WRTI)
Dr. Mohammed Omar is a zoologist and biochemist with extensive expertise in marine ecology, coral reef management, and ecological monitoring of coastal ecosystems.
He currently heads the Coastal and Marine Research Centre at Kenya’s Wildlife Research and Training Institute (WRTI), where he also serves as Principal Research Scientist. As Co-PI, Dr. Mohamed Omar will play a pivotal role in linking the project to national conservation frameworks and ensuring that outputs directly inform policy and practice. His leadership within WRTI and his co-chair role in the IUCN Kenya Species Specialist Group will facilitate seamless renewal of research permits and ensure rapid uptake of the project’s findings by relevant government agencies. Dr. Mohamed Omar’s longstanding experience in coral reef and marine protected area management will help align the genomic tools developed with real-world conservation priorities.
